Since 2009, Top Marks have been providing private tuition in Maths, English and Science from our dedicated study centre in Ormskirk. In 2013, due to increased demand, we opened in Formby and plan to have a number of centres across the Northwest area over the coming years. Our teaching model focuses on ‘individualised’ learning, where the student follows a specific learning plan according to their ability. The student can work towards their objectives either on a 1-2-1 basis with a subject specialist tutor, or in a small informal group setting with other students of the same age (our group sessions are 2 hours per week with a maximum of 5 students)
We also provide bespoke tuition (home schooled children), “Pupil Premium” services as well as working with adults on a range of qualifications including Professional Skills Test, Functional Skills and Entry Tests for a range of professions.
Tuition for children at school
Small group tuition (Maths & English) – this is by far our most popular service. Each classroom holds 5 students maximum, we group students by Key Stage but do not teach as a group. Prior to tuition starting, a detailed and individual learning plan will be formulated and the student will work towards this during the session. Of course we follow the National Curriculum, but we are able to react immediately to a student’s response to their work, this allows us to identify current knowledge and build from that, if we need to take a step backwards in order to move two steps forwards, then so be it. The sessions are informal, controlled and without distraction. We use a variety of teaching and learning tools (including PC’s and Ipads) which means the session are varied and diverse, keeping the student engaged. We will set homework unless instructed otherwise, its really important for students to be able to demonstrate that they’ve understood what we’ve taught them, and able to do it themselves without the teacher. Focus on fundamental concepts are reinforced regularly and we award positive response / progression in a range of different ways. For Yr 6 and Yr 11 students, plenty of exam practice is made available, as well as extra sessions near exam time.
Length of session – 2 hours / weekly
Monday – Thursday 4pm – 6pm and 6pm – 8pm and Saturday 9am – 11am and 11am – 1pm
One to One tuition – as above, an individualised learning plan will be generated for the student, although the student will be working with a subject specialist on a one to one basis.
Length of session – 1 hour / weekly
Monday – Thursday 4pm – 8pm and Saturday 9am – 5pm
Minimum booking 4 sessions, no long term commitment. This gives the student an opportunity to try us out and see what they think
Tuition for children not at school
We work with a number of students who are not in mainstream education. Of course, these students are welcome into our evening classes but we can provide tuition during the normal working day either from our study centres (preferred) or from home (within a reasonable distance from our base). External GCSE or A level examination entries can be organised and formal examinations sat at participating schools (fee’s apply)
Adult Tuition
We provide a range of bespoke adult tuition services including ‘Professional Skills Tests’ as well as traditional GCSE provision. We have worked with clients with a variety of tuition needs, including Public Sector workers, Engineers, interview assessments and even trainee pilots. You will be provided with a detailed learning plan and plenty of work to complete at home.
